Experimental study of fast pyrolysis vapors fractionation through different staged condensation configurations

The quality of biocrudes from fast pyrolysis lignocellulosic biomass can be improved by optimizing the downstream condensation systems to separate and concentrate selected classes compounds, thus operating different technological solutions temperatures in multiple stages. Scientific literature reports that fractional deployed as an effective relatively affordable step pyrolysis. It consists a controlled approach, which aims at separated collection compounds further upgraded bio-derived chemicals through treatments. In this study, has been applied reactor 1 kg h -1 feed, connected two units: one composed series spray condensers intensive cooler; second electrostatic precipitator cooler too. Fast pinewood was conducted bubbling fluidized bed 500 °C, while condensable vapours were collected interchangeable condensers. Using first configuration, high boiling point – such sugars lignin-derived oligomers condensed higher stage (100 170 °C), water soluble lighter most lower so largely removed bio-oil. condensing stages, bio-oil content remained below 7 wt % (resulting 20 MJ energy content) maintaining about 43% liquid yield, compared 55% single runs. work generated promising results, confirming interest on upscaling approach full scale biorefinering.
